About the Test
How accurate are polygraph tests?
When conducted by a qualified examiner using validated techniques, polygraph examinations yield conclusive results 95% of the time. The remaining 5% are inconclusive results, typically due to anxiety, medical factors, or physiological conditions—not indicative of deception.
How long does a polygraph examination take?
A typical examination takes 1.5-2 hours, including the pre-test interview (30-45 minutes), the actual polygraph test (30-45 minutes), and post-test discussion. Complex cases involving multiple issues may take longer.
Will I know the questions beforehand?
Yes, absolutely. Every question is reviewed with you during the pre-test interview. There are no surprise questions. This transparency is essential for accurate results and is standard practice per APA (American Polygraph Association) guidelines.
What does the polygraph actually measure?
The polygraph measures physiological responses including cardiovascular activity (blood pressure, heart rate), respiratory patterns, and electrodermal activity (skin conductance). These responses are analyzed to detect significant reactions that may indicate deception.
Can someone 'beat' a polygraph test?
While various countermeasures exist in theory, trained examiners are skilled at detecting manipulation attempts. Modern computerized polygraph systems like the Lafayette LX 7000 we use include algorithms designed to identify countermeasure attempts. Attempting to manipulate results typically produces inconclusive or deceptive outcomes.
What happens if my results are inconclusive?
Inconclusive results (5% of exams) mean the physiological data doesn't clearly indicate truth or deception. This can occur due to anxiety, medical conditions, medications, or other factors. We'll discuss the results with you and, if appropriate, may recommend retesting after addressing any contributing factors.
Preparation & Process
How should I prepare for a polygraph test?
Get a good night's sleep (at least 6-8 hours), eat a normal meal before your appointment, avoid excessive caffeine or energy drinks, and bring valid photo ID. Most importantly, be prepared to be completely honest. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the exam.
What if I'm nervous about the test?
Nervousness is completely normal and expected—most examinees experience some anxiety. This does not affect your results because the polygraph measures specific physiological responses to relevant questions, not general nervousness. Our examiner will help you feel comfortable and explain everything thoroughly.
Where are tests conducted?
98% of examinations are conducted at client locations—police stations, law offices, corporate offices, or other suitable venues. We travel throughout Southern Maryland, DC & Virginia. Our mobile services ensure convenience while maintaining professional testing conditions.
What should I bring to my examination?
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID). If applicable, bring any documentation related to your case, medical disclosure information, and any forms provided by the requesting party (employer, attorney, agency).
Can I take medications before the test?
Take your regular prescribed medications as normal—do not skip doses. However, you must disclose all medications during the pre-test interview so the examiner can account for any potential effects. Some medications may require medical clearance before testing.
What medical conditions might affect the test?
Conditions that may affect testing include severe cardiovascular issues, respiratory conditions, epilepsy, extreme anxiety disorders, and certain neurological conditions. Pregnancy in the third trimester is also a consideration. Disclose all medical conditions during scheduling so we can determine if testing is appropriate.
Results & Reports
How quickly will I receive results?
Verbal results are typically provided immediately after the examination. Written reports are delivered within 24 hours. Expedited same-day reports are available for urgent cases at an additional fee.
Who receives the polygraph results?
Results are provided only to the party who requested and paid for the examination, unless you've signed an authorization for release to additional parties. We maintain strict confidentiality and never share results without proper authorization.
Are polygraph results admissible in court?
Admissibility varies by jurisdiction and is typically at the judge's discretion. In many cases, polygraph results are used for investigative purposes, plea negotiations, or probation/parole monitoring rather than direct courtroom evidence. We can provide expert testimony when results are admitted.
What does the report include?
Our comprehensive reports include: examiner credentials, examination date/location, questions asked, physiological data analysis, numerical scoring, conclusion (No Deception Indicated, Deception Indicated, or Inconclusive), and examiner signature. Reports are suitable for legal and administrative proceedings.
Legal & Ethical
Can my employer require me to take a polygraph?
The Employee Polygraph Protection Act (EPPA) restricts most private employers from requiring polygraph tests. However, exemptions exist for government agencies, security firms, pharmaceutical companies, and investigations involving economic loss. Law enforcement agencies can require pre-employment polygraphs.
What if I refuse to answer a question?
You have the right to refuse any question. However, refusing relevant questions will likely result in an incomplete or inconclusive examination. All questions are reviewed beforehand, so you'll know exactly what will be asked before the test begins.
Is the examination confidential?
Absolutely. We maintain strict confidentiality for all examinations. Results are shared only with authorized parties. Records are securely stored for a minimum of 5 years per professional standards, with encrypted digital storage and locked physical files.
Can I have an attorney present?
Policies vary by situation. For criminal matters, attorney presence may be permitted depending on the requesting party's requirements. For pre-employment or private examinations, third-party presence is typically not allowed as it can affect the testing environment and results.
